Myrtle Beach Beach Rules: How to Have Fun While Staying Within the Law

Nothing beats a day on the beach at Seawatch Resort in  Myrtle Beach. With warm sunshine, rolling waves, and family-friendly vibes, it’s the perfect place to unwind. But before you load up the cooler and pitch your umbrella, it’s important to know the local beach rules so you can enjoy your time safely—and avoid a costly citation.

Here’s a breakdown of what you can and can’t do on the beach, plus pro tips to make the most of your day.

๐Ÿงƒ

Can You Bring Drinks to the Beach?

Yes—but with restrictions.

โœ… Allowed:

  • Non-alcoholic drinks in plastic bottles, cans, or reusable cups

  • Water, soda, juice, sports drinks, etc.

๐Ÿšซ Not Allowed:

  • Alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, liquor) are prohibited on public beaches

  • Glass containers of any kind

Tip: Pack a cooler with your favorite beverages in cans or plastic containers, and make sure you have a trash bag to keep the beach clean.

Umbrellas, Tents & Shade Rules

Myrtle Beach has strict rules on shade structures, especially during peak season (May 1–Labor Day).

โœ…

Allowed:

  • Beach umbrellas up to 7.5 feet in diameter

  • Must be set in line with or behind the lifeguard stands ( local tip: Set up in front of the campground no restriction on location)

  • Baby tents (small for infants only) under 4’ tall x 3’ wide x 3’ deep

๐Ÿšซ

Not Allowed (May 1–Labor Day):

  • Canopies, sport-brellas, cabanas, tarps, tents, or pavilions

  • Anything larger than a standard umbrella

Tip: Rent an approved beach umbrella and chair combo from one of the many licensed vendors along the Grand Strand. They’ll set it up for you—and you’ll stay within the rules.

๐Ÿšญ

Smoking on the Beach

Most parts of Myrtle Beach do not allow smoking on the beach. While the city itself hasn’t banned it citywide, many resorts and beach areas restrict smoking to designated areas.

Check signs and resort policies before lighting up.

๐Ÿ•

Can You Bring Your Dog?

Yes—but time and leash rules apply.

  • May 1–Labor Day: Dogs allowed before 10 AM and after 5 PM

  • Rest of the year: Dogs are allowed during all daylight hours

  • Dogs must always be on a leash no longer than 7 feet

  • Always clean up after your pet (waste bags required)

Tip: The early morning is perfect for a beach walk with your pup—and much cooler, too.

๐ŸŽฃ

Fishing, Fires & Surfboards

๐ŸŽฃ Fishing is allowed, but some areas (especially near piers) may require permits or have restricted zones.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Fires, fireworks, and bonfires are prohibited on the beach. That includes grills, fire pits, and sparklers.

๐Ÿ„ Surfboards are permitted in designated surfing zones. Look for signs posted by lifeguards.

๐ŸŽง

Music & Noise

  • You’re welcome to enjoy music—but keep volume to a respectful level.

  • Large speakers, boom boxes, and DJ setups may be prohibited during high-traffic hours.

Tip: Bring a small waterproof Bluetooth speaker to enjoy tunes at a personal level without disturbing others.

๐Ÿงผ

Keep It Clean: Leave No Trace

  • Myrtle Beach requires beachgoers to remove all personal items daily by 7:30 PM

  • This includes umbrellas, chairs, toys, and coolers

  • Anything left behind may be removed by beach patrol

Bonus Tip: Bring a mesh bag for sandy toys and a trash bag to collect all your litter. Leave the beach better than you found it!

โœ… Quick Beach Rule Checklist:

  • โœ… Umbrella under 7.5 ft diameter only

  • โœ… No tents, cabanas, or canopies (May–Labor Day)

  • โœ… No alcohol or glass

  • โœ… Dogs OK before 10 AM & after 5 PM (on leash)

  • โœ… No fires or fireworks

  • โœ… Pack out all trash and gear daily

Following these beach rules not only helps keep Myrtle Beach safe and beautiful—it also ensures everyone has a great time. Most importantly, it protects wildlife, keeps the ocean clean, and allows families and visitors to enjoy the beach worry-free.

So pack your umbrella, grab your cooler (minus the booze), and head to the sand for a perfect Myrtle Beach day.
