We are Bobby and Donna, and we have made the drive from SeaWatch Resort to both Southport and Wilmington. These are not quick outings from Myrtle Beach. We recommend choosing one when your family wants to trade a resort day for time on the road and a different waterfront.
Wilmington gave us a busier downtown atmosphere that reminded us of Charleston. We especially enjoyed walking beside the water. Southport felt slower. Our visit included lunch, Cape Fear River views, seeing a lighthouse, and making a ferry outing part of the experience.
Why we would take a family to Southport
Southport is our first choice when parents want shops, restaurants, river views, and an easy pace once they arrive. Its long history as a filming location adds something else to notice while walking through town. We would leave room for lunch instead of trying to complete a long activity list.
When Wilmington is the better match
Choose Wilmington when your group would rather spend time downtown. The waterfront walk and city atmosphere were the parts we enjoyed most. It suits guests who like browsing, walking, and deciding where to eat as the outing unfolds.

Reaching either place takes real travel time when you start at SeaWatch. We think the mileage is worthwhile when everyone needs a break from the sun and wants to make the outing the day’s main plan. If the beach and pools still sound better, stay at the resort and save this idea for another visit.
